Paramount Rx’s Hampton Roads prescription discount cards have already saved a lot of money since launching earlier this year, the company reported Thursday. The discount program that’s free to join for the Hampton Roads community has reportedly saved members more than $500,000 this year.

There’s a new discount prescription drug card in town. Paramount Rx, a North Carolina-based prescription benefits management company, has launched Hampton Roads Rx with Farm Fresh Food and Pharmacy as its preferred provider. The free cards, which can be downloaded at hamptonroadsdiscountrx.com, promise a 30 to 35 percent average discount off retail prices on all FDA-approved generic and prescription drugs at participating pharmacies.

There are no costs involved for customers who hold a discount card and participate in the program.

Lunds and Byerly’s have launched a program offering discounted pet medications at their 14 in-store pharmacies. “This program will offer our customers a new standard in cost savings and convenience, and will allow us to provide a one-stop solution for meeting the medication needs of all members of the family, including those with four legs,” said Jodi Ristau, senior manager of pharmacy operations for Lunds and Byerly’s pharmacies.

Buying pet prescriptions at a neighborhood pharmacy instead of a veterinarian’s office isn’t new, but more pharmacies are joining the ranks, including Rainbow, Lunds and Byerly’s pharmacies. Nearly half of the prescriptions that vets write can be filled with a human drug equivalent, said Ron Richmond, director of managed health care contracting for SuperValu, which includes Cub Foods.
