Study Finds Nearly 7 in 10 Americans on Prescription Drugs, Prescription Discount Programs Help Consumers Control Costs

With the escalating costs of prescription medications, consumers are looking to cut costs wherever possible. Prescription discount programs help consumers control costs, which are expected to continue to rise.

A recent study by Mayo Clinic found that 7 in 10 Americans are on at least one prescription drug. The Paramount Rx prescription discount program allows consumers to receive discounted prices on their medication needs without restrictions.

According to the Mayo Clinic study, prescription drug use has increased steadily over the past decade and consumer spending on prescription drugs reached $250 billion in 2009 (the year studied), and accounted for 12 percent of total personal health care expenditures. The researchers report that drug-related spending is expected to continue to grow in the coming years.

Below are the top three benefits of using a prescription discount card:

1. Significant savings at no extra cost

Paramount Rx’s prescription discount card program provides an average savings of 36 percent off retail pricing. Card holders and family members simply present the discount card to the pharmacist each time they fill a prescription. There are no deductibles or maximum benefit levels and no exclusions for pre-existing health conditions. The card is accepted at more than 54,000 pharmacies, including all major U.S. chains.

2. Convenience with online tools

All FDA-approved prescription drugs are included and online tools help consumers find the best prices and pharmacy locations across the nation. Online tools to help customers manage their prescription needs at their own convenience include a pharmacy locator, drug pricing tools with availability of generic alternatives and detailed drug information.

3.  Savings for all members of the family – including pets

The Paramount Rx prescription card is not just limited to the two-legged members of the family but also applies to those of the four-legged variety. Approximately half of all pet prescriptions can be filled at local pharmacies in the form of human equivalents. The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) partnered with Paramount Rx to offer the Save a Pet Rx and Help a Pet Rx prescription card programs, allowing customers to save on prescriptions for their families and pets while contributing to the ASPCA®.

Organizations currently benefiting from a relationship with Paramount Rx include state and local governments, non-profit organizations, financial institutions and industry trade organizations – all providing discounts to consumers.

Paramount Rx effectively bridges the relationship among employers, consumers and the pharmacy industry. This is accomplished through tailored plan designs, effective cost sharing strategies, transparent pricing among all parties, and lower drug costs to consumers.
